12 Yards (NaPoWriMo Day Two)
Today’s prompt from NaPoWriMo.net:
“Today, we’d like to challenge you to write your own poem in which you recount a childhood memory. Try to incorporate a sense of how that experience indicated to you, even then, something about the person you’d grow up to be. Happy writing!”
my poem:
12 Yards
I did everything perfectly. Placed the ball on the spot. Took four steps back, one to the left. Looked the keeper in the eyes. Thought he might cry, I grin on one side. I was the best in my school, by far. Practiced the most, by far. I breathed.
I struck the ball sweet and true. Ad adult kick’s THUMP! from my child’s foot. Poor keeper didn’t even move. The ball flew perfectly. Then perfectly smashed into the crossbar and sailed perfectly into the crowd. We lost the final.
I’m still bitter about it. I’m still never enough.
